Hippies Use the Back Door is a hanging wall-piece depicting woven phrases that my dad used to describe the hangout scene for teenagers in Atlanta around 1968. These words include everything from musicians to stores to radio stations to secret hideaways. Something to take note of is that almost all of these words refer to, revolve around, or deal with music. Atlanta was one of the most important cities for the 1960s music scene, and the teenagers did not take this for granted. According to my dad weekends were filled with nothing but “being young, having, fun, listening to some of the best music rock and roll had ever seen.”

Technique used from the book Woven Shibori by Catharine Ellis. Intention wefts floats are woven in a specific pattern with tabby as the ground cloth. Once the weavings are cut off the loom, weft floats are pulled tight to create resists, then the cloth is dyed, resulting in a shibori pattern on top of the tabby cloth.
