Hello! Welcome to my website. I am an Art Educator and Fiber Artist. I hold a Master of Art in Teaching from Georgia state University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design. I currently teach elementary art to kindergarten through fifth grade at CH Gullatt Elementary in Union City, GA.
As a child, I did not like art class. That’s something that you probably do not hear from many people applying for art teacher positions. But, the reason I never liked art class is the very reason I want so desperately to teach art. Every art class I had made me feel like I was not ‘good’ at art because what I created didn’t fit in the box that my teachers had taught as ‘good art.’ I didn’t particularly enjoy drawing, but good artists did, and did it well, so obviously, I wasn’t an artist. When, in reality, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. I believe that we are all artists, that each and every person is intrinsically creative and has a desire to create somewhere inside of them. I want to encourage and instill this in my students, and I want them to be able to explore many mediums of art, and find what parts of art they cannot live without, and even discover the parts of art they may not particularly like. By using a TAB classroom set up, I will allow the students in my room to take charge of their creativity, and be able to learn, explore, and make art daily. This method teaches students to appreciate the process over the product, which instills patience, responsibility, and curiosity. Above all else I want to teach my students that everyone is an artist and that their art matters. In turn, I want my students to learn confidence, have a deep understanding of the curriculum being taught to them, encourage and learn from one another, and enjoy the art process. I believe that the classroom, especially a classroom rooted in the arts, should be a safe space for all students. I want the tone of my classroom environment to be creative, inspiring, accepting, and fun! My classroom will have no room for judgement or negativity, and kindness will always be a basic expectation. Overall, my goal as an art teacher is to foster an environment of creatives that make art because they want to, because they know they are supposed to, as art is just as essential as any other part of life.
